THE WORST PLOT AND CHARACTERS HUGHES EVER CAME UP WITH As good and appealing as Lea Thompson is(the director married her) the heart and soul of this film is Mary Stuart Masterson. She is a 'some kind of wonderful actress' and it is such a shame that she appeared in so few films - her most memorable being the superb Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. First is the commentary with the director, who happens to be married to Lea Thompson} ,which is very entertaining. This ultra-plain stick figure of a female should be cast as the ugly duckling in any movie she is in. Also, Masterson comes off as so butch it is hard to imagine here lusting after Stoltz. This DVD really does this film justice & the music in this film is GREAT too! While things are further complicated by the fact that Keith's best friend Watts is hopelessly in love with him, something that Keith is oblivious too. Eric plays the underdog geeky hero who loves the high school sweetheart and ends up going on a date with her, which makes him the enemy of all the beautiful people. "Some Kind of Wonderful" is yet another film in which Hughes and his team show a special ability to make an entertaining movie about teenagers, which is also about life, about insecurity, about rejection, about learning to grow.

And in the final sequence, in which the tomboy acts as chauffeur on the dream date, the dialogue isn't about sex; it's about learning to be true to yourself and not fall for the way people are packaged. It's a fairly wholesome movie, and has a nice message. The plot of the movie itself is pretty weak, but the actors (Eric Stoltz need I say more) keep the movie interesting. A story of a sensitive, young would-be artist, who vies for the affection of his high school's popularity queen. Still great and now my kids appreciate it too.
